Note: The writer (or owner of this blog) would not be held responsible for any kind of damage to your device or anything related to it.

This method has been tested to work in following scenarios:

If you are on GB firmware version 4.0.2.A.0.62 or 4.0.2.A.0.42

If you are on ICS (unrooted only) and want to downgrade it back to a rooted GB.

Rooting Xperia Ray is not an easy job as Sony fixed the vulnerability that allowed the device to easily get rooted. So here is what you should do to get the device rooted.

Things you would need:

Flashtool (Only if you have got firmware version 4.0.2.A.0.62 or unrooted ICS on your device)
Download it from here: http://androxyde.github.com/

Firmware version 4.0.2.A.0.42 (Only if you have got firmware version 4.0.2.A.0.62 or unrooted ICS on your device). To check firmware version, go to Settings->About phone->Build Number
You can download this firmware from here: http://www.mediafire.com/?17u4y4qdv8rbsib

DooMLoRD’s Easy Rooting Toolkit (Download it from here: http://forum.xda-developers.com/attachment.php?attachmentid=841876&d=1325678726)

If you are on GB firmware version 4.0.2.A.0.62 or ICS, you need to follow both the flashing and rooting steps in order. Otherwise, you can skip to the rooting step.

Steps to follow – Flashing:

Make a complete backup of all your data as you might lose them after flashing or rooting. If you don’t care about the data, skip this step.

Install and run Flashtool.

Make sure that there are no security applications (such as avast! Or AVG) installed on your device.

Make sure that “Unknown sources” in Settings->Applications and “USB debugging” in Settings->Applications->Development are checked.

Make sure that adb drivers for your device are installed. If you have got the “Sony PC Companion” installed and have used it previously to connect your device, you need not worry.

Connect your device to the pc.

Drag “by _boy_racer_ (ST18i)_4.0.2.A.0.42_ce.ftf” file to Flashtool.

Click Flash (Bolt sign) and wait until flashing is complete.

Steps to follow – Rooting:

Make a complete backup of all your data as you might lose them after flashing or rooting. If you don’t care about the data, skip this step.

Unpack DooMLoRD’s Toolkit and run “runme.bat”. Press any key to continue. You are now rooted. In order to confrim, install Root Checker from Google Play.

Now it is up to you whether you want to upgrade your device to the latest GB firmware by Sony (via FOTA) or leave it to the current firmware. Your root will remain intact in any case. However, upgrading your rooted GB device back to ICS has not been tested and is not recommended.

Your suggestions and queries are welcomed in the comments below.

Extreme competition in the mobile phone business have compelled Nokia to launch its most affordable and cheapest phone. NOKIA 103, priced at PKR 1500 (USD 15.91 ), has been released all over Pakistan being the most affordable phone in the market but it certainly doesn’t cut back on its features for such a low price range.

The NOKIA 103 SIM-free(meaning that it is not locked on a carrier and comes without a sim). Having a stylish scratch proof cover and a dust resistant keypad. It is a light weighted phone, weighing just 250g with the dimensions of 107mm x 45mm x 50 mm, provided with the 800mA battery it gives a talk time of 11 hours and a staggering stand-by time of 27 days. Other features included in the Nokia 103 are, powerful front torch-light, a FM radio transmitter which works only with headsets (included), a speaking clock, MP3 grade ring-tones and the standard games.

Unlike other cheap phones in the market right now which just provides a simple celender and alarm clock, Nokia 103 in addition to basic feature like calender and a speaking clock, considers the sharing of phone between people and provides call tracker and support for multiple phone books as extra features, further more it allows to store up to 250 SMS messages. Nokia 103 is truly, designed for people who find it difficult to afford a phone, but need one to progress economically and socially.

As Nokia says, on 31st May, 2012 in its press release:

“Nokia has now introduced its new Nokia 103 across Pakistan. The mobile phone happens to be Nokia’s most affordable product yet, but it certainly doesn’t cut back on its features for such a low price range. With a plethora of built-in functions, the phone is geared towards first time mobile phone buyers.

Nokia 103 boasts of a new powerful battery providing a talk time of 11 hours and a staggering stand-by time of 27 days, a stylish scratch proof cover and a dust resistant keypad. It is a mobile phone designed for people who find it difficult to afford a phone, but need one to progress economically and socially. Other features included in the Nokia 103 area powerful front torch-light, a FM radio transmitter which works only with headsets (included), a speaking clock, MP3 grade ring-tones and the standard games.

“Nokia, as a company, aims to cater to the varying needs of customers from different social walks of life globally,” said Arif Shafique, General Manager, Nokia Pakistan and Afghanistan. “Of the world’s 7 billion people, 3.2 billion don’t have a phone yet. One of the strongest constraints is economical and we’ve been progressively lowering the entry barrier to the market while continually increasing the capability of our devices and delivering phones with contemporary, fresh designs. Nokia 103 combines a great experience for a first time user at an affordable cost.”

The mobile phone has been optimized for the needs of the Pakistani masses that are highly price sensitive with the above-mentioned features, and a price of around PKR 1500. The Nokia 103 is a mobile phone which will bring Nokia closer to its goal of connecting the next billion.“

28th May 2012 witnessed the discovery of one of the most lethal malwares in the history of computers. The malware termed Flame (also know as Flamer, sKyWIper, Skywiper and Flamer.A), has been making a lot of news around the world and has infected approximately 1000 machines (as suggested by Kaspersky Lab), with victims including governmental organizations, educational institutions and private individuals. As of May 2012, the countries most affected are Iran, Israel, Sudan, Syria, Lebanon, Saudi Arabia, and Egypt. However these figures are only based on approximations and early research and the actual number of infected machines can be lesser / greater than the figures quoted here.

However, if you still want to make some precautionary measures (which we absolutely suggest) and make sure that your computer is clean from this deadly malware, this is what you can do.

Bitdefender Labs has released the removal tools for the Flame malware which can be downloaded from the following links:

32 – bit removal tools

64 -bit removal tools

Download the appropriate version of the tool based on your version of Windows and perform a complete system scan. Note that if you are already protected by a Bitdefender security solution, you do not need to run the removal tool.

You can get more details about this malware in the following link:

A new type of malware termed as Flame (also know as Flamer, sKyWIper, Skywiper and Flamer.A) that was discovered on 28th May 2012 has been making headlines in the computer security world and has been dubbed as the most discrete and dangerous malware ever. The malware is the most complicated piece of software ever created for Cyber Warfare and has been speculated to be around from as long as 2007 (around five years!!).

The malware was first identified by the Russian security firm Kaspersky Lab in May 2012 when Kaspersky Lab was asked by the United Nations International Telecommunication Union to investigate reports of a virus affecting Iranian Oil Ministry computers.

Following are some of the very unusual behaviors and tactics exhibited by this malware:

It is an unusually large program; about 20 megabytes in size and attacks Microsoft Windows operating System.

Is believed to be sponsored by a nation-state.

Is partly written in Lua scripting language with compiled C++ code linked in. The malware also makes use of Assembly Language.

Is capable of spreading through USB devices and local networks.

Is highly modular, making it highly flexible and capable of carrying out any task for its attackers.

Has several modules that can be added, removed and turned on/off from a remote location.

Is speculated to be roaming undetected in the wild from as long as 2007.

Uses five encryption algorithms and an SQLite database to communicate and store data.

Is believed to be 20 times more complicated than the Stuxnet and Duqu malware and would take about 10 years to be completely understood by security experts.

Is capable of stealthily switching on devices such as microphone, Bluetooth and camera to siphon off information. It also takes system screenshots and keystrokes from time to time and adjusts its frequency based on the type of active applications.

According to estimates by Kaspersky, Flame has infected approximately 1,000 machines, with victims including governmental organizations, educational institutions and private individuals. As of May 2012, the countries most affected are Iran, Israel, Sudan, Syria, Lebanon, Saudi Arabia, and Egypt.

Following are some more gory and technical details taken from Bitdefender Labs.

The following is the list of modules that have been discovered and inspected so far:

EUPHORIA (controls the spreading mechanism via USB sticks)

JIMMY (deals with data leakage)

GATOR (responsible with communication between the infected host and the C&C servers)

MICROBE (used to record audio and upload the captured audio streams to a remote location)

FROG (purpose: unknown as of 31st May 2012)

FLASK (purpose: unknown as of 31st May 2012)

GADGET (purpose: unknown as of 31st May 2012)

MUNCH (purpose: unknown as of 31st May 2012)

SNACK (purpose: unknown as of 31st May 2012)

SUICIDE ( used to automatically clean up the system when the appropriate command is issued by remote attackers)

REAR_WINDOW [nteps32.ocx] (spying component)

atmpsvcn.ocx (purpose: unknown as of 31st May 2012)

The EUPHORIA module controls the spreading mechanism via USB sticks. It also exploits the system’s autorun feature.

[fragment of the configuration file for the EUPHORIA module]

Flamer particularly focuses on documents, pictures and CAD files. The analysis also reveals that the MICROBE component is used to record audio and upload captured audio streams to remote location.

[fragment of the configuration file for the MICROBE module]
MICROBE.DEFAULT_RATE dword 20000
MICROBE.RUN_MODE

The SUICIDE component is responsible for wiping out the malware footprints when issued a remote command by the attackers. The referenced files are listed below:

SUICIDE.RESIDUAL_FILES.A string %temp%\~a28.tmp

This is a small tutorial to show how to make Subclipse work behind a proxy server.

If you are trying to commit, checkout or update your project in eclipse and you are getting ‘connection refused’ or ‘connection’ related issues, then you are probably connected to the internet behind a proxy server. To make subclipse work, you have to edit the servers file in Windows.

Make sure that folders are not hidden in Windows and then navigate to the following Directory:

C:\Users\USERNAME\AppData\Roaming\Subversion

Where USERNAME is your Windows username.

Open servers file with notepad or any text editor and uncomment the following lines:

http-proxy-host = XXXXX
http-proxy-port = XXXXX
